Consider Art

Secrets

I was so moved last week when I received a note from Main Line Art Center (MLAC). The students of Haverford Middle School attended the recent Member's Exhibition and created ekphrastic poems inspired by the works on view. Their teacher sent in some of the best poems to share with MLAC and artists.  One of them was inspired by my work.   I am always fascinated to learn how my art touches someone; oftentimes it makes the viewer ponder a happy or painful time in their life. Creating work about a difficult moment connects us to others on a deeper level and assists [...]

From the Hearts of Stars - a shipping container installation...

Living in the Southwest desert for 16 years, made it an ever-present influence on me - debris was picked up and saved for use in the studio. These bits share aspects of our human condition; impermanence, while paradoxically, the ability to exist for thousands of years. we continue to add strata to our lives each time we make a decision; each time we make a move in the world. For this site specific installation in a repurposed shipping container, I took these bits and slip cast them, coated them with under glazes and with crawl glazes. Some have been fired many times, others only once and some, not at all. I also added dirt that I scooped up from the desert. Sculpted human limbs were intertwined with tree limbs amidst the debris, in my constructed desert floor. [...]

The Presence of Absence - at eye lounge gallery

After three years with the venerable artist collective eye lounge, in downtown Phoenix, my residency has ended. It's been a great experience for me. As an artist making work in a home studio far North of the city center, eye lounge provided me with a community of artists who share a passion for art, hard work and dedication to the community. For many years, I wasn't plugged in to the art scene here as I traveled around the country living another life. But after a few years of studying and engaging with other arts organizations, the time had come; I could focus on my practice [...]

Artists in their Studios Project - Bohonus Photography

I met Bradford Bohonus through the artist/curator Tara Sharpe in downtown Phoenix a few months ago.  He told me he has been shooting 360° Panoramas of artists in their studios and asked if I'd like him to take one of me in my studio. I warned him it was messy but he wasn't deterred. So, we did it, yesterday. And he had it completed and posted on his website and social media just a few hours later. Very cool!   Artists' Studios   It's a good idea because he's capturing time in spaces that might not be available for too long. In many cases, artists are forced [...]

Annual ASU/CRC Ceramic Studio Tour

I was involved for the first time earlier this year in ASU/CRC (Ceramic Research Center) Self Guided Ceramic Studio Tour. What a great experience! Arizona Artists submit a portfolio the summer before and are selected by a jury panel to participate for up to three years on the tour. With up to 15 tour sites, 50+ artists, tons of scheduled demos and hosted events, there is a lot of ground to cover but a well laid out map helps people get around.      I had the pleasure of spending the weekend with Magda Gluszek and Patricia Sannit. While our aesthetics differ, we are figurative [...]
